I found this 1950's image of Blakeymoor on the internet a while ago and was interested to see that the whole upper storey of this block was at that time Pensioner House. They even had their OAP flag flying from the rooftop. That's quite an extensive run of property, from what is the newsagents today, right down to the Jubilee pub, so it must have been a substantial suite of offices.
Not too easy to see, but I think it reads along the front 'National Federation Of Old Age Pensioners Association'
I remember the hobby shop at the far end of the row that had a model railway in the window and a penny slot on the outside of the window frame. When you put your penny in, the train set would operate for a few minutes. Better still, if you saw someone else putting their penny in you could watch it for free and save your penny for four black jacks.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember that train Alan, but I do remember my younger brother in the late 60's or early 70's selling his train set (or partsof it) to a model shop along that stretch. Could have been the same one.
