Rail Excursion to Corporation Park - Whit Monday 1863

An old handbill from 1863. It seems strange in our present times, that people would have travelled from as far afield as Colne for a day out in a park here in Blackburn. But obviously they did and they even laid on special trains for them, stopping at every station in between the two towns, to pick up more passengers.  It is a lovely park though and was probably even more attractive back then.

  1. I've done a lot of research on early railway excursions especially in the north of England up to the 1860s and your poster is particularly interesting. Can you tell me what the CP collection is and how I can contact them to see if there are other images? Is it Corporation Park? Susan Major

  2. Hello Susan - CP are my initials, my Christian name and my surname. Sorry that is the only image I have in relation to railway excursions.

I remember seeing a similar poster / handbill on Flickr a few years ago, relating to Preston. have a search on there, it may still be on.

    Kind regards.

  3. I see! I'm writing a book based on my research and wonder if it would be possible to include a copy of your poster as an illustration?

    Best wishes

  5. Hi Susan

Re your last message. I'm sorry but I don't have the original. I never did have. All I've ever had is the image above, which someone sent to me when I was moderating on another Blackburn website back in 2009.

    Regards.

  7. I'm glad you got it sorted Susan. I wouldn't have had a clue who sent it to me originally. I was moderating on a local history group and we were getting inundated with Blackburn related images at the time.

    Good luck with your book.

    Regards

    Colin
