Can anyone tell me where this is in Blackburn. It is a still from a DVD I was loaned, but sadly there was no narration and no titles/subtitles. I'm guessing that it was in the town centre somewhere (or close by), as the photos either side of it were town centre shots.
Could the tall building on the extreme left have been a pub? Was the corner shop, with what looks like tiled internal walls, by the crossing, have been a chippy, cafe, butchers or fishmongers?

  1. Sorry Roger, your comment vanished into the ether when I came to approve it.

Roger suggested that this is Market Street in Darwen. It very probably is. Somehow it must have slipped onto the Blackburn DVD. I'm pretty sure it's the only non Blackburn photo on there, as I recognise the majority of the other 340 pictures.

This might sound a daft question Roger, but which is Market Street. Is it the street off the A666 / Duckworth St just before the Circus, where the newsagent / tobacco kiosk used to be, or is it the street to the rear of the Market Hall? Or is it neither of those?

  2. Market Street is the A666 where Woolworth's used to be.

  3. I know where you mean now Roger, but I can't say I recognise any of these properties. If anything, it looks a bit further down the road to me, more like part of Duckworth Street (towards the Brookside pub), but I'm assuming you're a Darrener, so you'll know it better than me.

    Cheers for the info.

  5. Well done Roger for solving this location.
Colin ...Who the Hell is that driving the Horse and Cart (Darth Vader !!) He'd certainly scare the crap out of me if I saw him on the road.

  6. It sure looks like Darth Vader. Or perhaps 'Death' / The Grim Reaper. Thing is, with a lot of the old coloured postcards, they were black & white images that were coloured by hand and I think the folks doing the tinting used a bit of artistic licence.

Classic example of that, I have a photo of the lower part of Preston N. Rd and in the B & W photo, there's a step ladder, but in the exact same photo, the step ladder has been omitted in the coloured version. I'll put them side by side on here sometime, soyou can see for yourself what I mean.

  7. The buildings are on Market St Darwen as has been suggested but the right of the pic is Croft St Darwen wich leads onto Darwen bus station all these buildings have been demolished. The lower photo on the left is where woolies used to be, the Brookside is a lot futher down. Hope this helps.

  10. Hi

Have you tried a 'search' in Google.

It's possible the reference library might have a DVD for sale too.

There's been a couple over the years. I think one was called Blackburn Past.

    Regards.

    Colin
